When temperatures are chilly, the festive flavors of this spiced-hot cider can be a delicious way to increase your liquid calories and help with nausea. While this recipe makes four servings, any extra cider you make can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated later.

This cider is a good choice for patients advised against drinking cold beverages because of the type of chemotherapy they are receiving. If hot beverages irritate your stomach, let this drink cool to room temperature before drinking.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups pasteurized apple cider

  • 6 cloves

  • 5 allspice berries

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced

  • 1 orange, sliced

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons honey

Directions

  1. In a saucepan over low heat, combine the cider, cloves, allspice, cinnamon stick, ginger, orange slices, and 1 tablespoon of the honey. Simmer for 8 to 10 minutes.

  2. Strain into mugs. Taste and add the remaining tablespoon of honey if necessary.
